Backyard Display

Postby cdnbeehive » Tue Aug 24, 2010 7:27 pm

For about $100 and a few hours of scavenging some cut poles, I managed to build a nice backyard display. It holds 53 insulators and stands 6 feet tall, 44 inches wide.

I used metal pins removed from transpo brackets because they level nicely when tightened.

Very nice display Chris. You did an excellent job. Are you going to add backlighting for at night?

Yes,

I was thinking of placing a light on the ground in front shining upwards. This would be the simplest optiona anyway!

For anyone else who wants to build a similar display, I spaced the 154's, 152's and 145's at 4.5 inches, the 143's at 4 inches, and the tolls/ponies at 3.5 inches.

I left 8 inches of clearance between levels, with the 2x2 reinforcements and nuts projecting into this space. This left enough room to squeeze the glass in and screw it on. The oak pins need to be screwed into the glass first for this to work. All of the CD's were tight fits, the toughest being the 102's with heavy dome glass.

In order to make the insulators with lots of dome glass line up with the others, I sawed off the top 1/2 inch of the oak pins. This allows the metal pin to come up further and touch the inside of the glass. This was the advantage of using these tramp pins is the way they self-level when tightened, and the oak portion can be cut shorter if needed. All-metal pins will work too, but would be harder to shorten.
