"New" style discovered by yours truly

Hi guys. I am a little embarrassed to admit this in public, but it has taken me 2 years to follow up on a discovery of a potential new style of insulator used in the Ottawa area. In November 2011 I found pieces of an early glazeweld insulator along an old power line. I never had enough parts to get decent dimensions off of it, but sent my pics to Elton Gish anyways. Elton figured it was probably a new style, but subsequent visits to the area did not turn up any more specimens. Finally nearly 2 years later I got back out on the hunt, and found 3 more pole sites with some fairly large chunks about 50 feet away from the pole bases. I collected all I could and ended up with parts of 7 more, hoping to "kitsulate" an entire specimen. Unfortunately I could make a whole one, but got enough together of one to get a decent picture and dimensions.

The insulator itself is similar to Canadian Porcelain Style 313 from catalog 401. The glaze colour also seems to point at these as being CP products, although they are unmarked.

Attached are a few pics of my finds. Tentatively this insulator will become the U-741 pending my sending measurements to Elton.

enjoy!

Cool find, congrats. Nice to know there are still new discoveries being made.

Not the purtiest thing around, nor is it over unusual (very simple if you ask me) but a thrill to find. I will bring the best ones with me to your place in October. Hopefully Ted will be up to see it.

The new insulator has officially been designated as the U-713A. It is quite similar to the New Lexington U-713, however the glaze indicates it is likely a Canadian Porcelain product.

The style is a smaller version of the No. 894 in the CP catalogue, being 3 3/4" x 6 1/4".

Very cool. You've got more than enough there for a cut and paste repair to make a complete example (or two), I`ve done several of these in the past on rare multiparts and suspensions and they turn out great as longs it`s done well. The green and pink M-2255 below was made from 3 different broken specimens with epoxy, cement and a diamond cutting wheel.

Here is a pic of the kitsulated example and an example I had cut at a core sample laboratory where I work...
