Unmarked U-38 value?

Postby cdnbeehive » Wed Aug 03, 2011 5:58 pm

I keep digging unmarked Locke U-38's and was wondering if I should bother keeping them. Anyone have a book value?

Hi Chris:
I don't know what a U38 looks like. Do you have a pic of this insulator so we can see what it looks like and the colors you have found ?

My apologies- they are U-39's. If you look at the second link and scroll down, you will see what I have. The colours are similar, varying from caramel to brown, depending on how much glaze was used. Two that I have found have a wider wire groove, others are identical to the photo. Essentially I can probably easily produce about 20 more.

Here is a pic of the last 3 I found. This sums up the colour range so far.

They are some of the tiniest pintype insulators I have seen (for a standard pin) and very crude.

Hi Chris:
A pic is worth 1000 words ;)
Those little guys don't show up very often. The come in a couple of dome stamped markings also. If I was digging them up, I'd be bringing them home.
If I recall, the ones I had came from the east coast.
I think they are a 3.00 insulator ...... When you find a buyer. I'm not really the guy to ask about porcelain though :?
Good digging ............ Robin

Looks like they may be Thomas products to me. I remember digging a few pieces of those in the Ottawa area as well.

Ted,

I am digging these in the place you told me about.

I am typically turning up a complete insulator with each hour of digging. So far 102's, 121's, 106's, broken transpositions, broken Brookie 101's in olive and aqua. There is a gap between your dig spot and mine, so I hope to dig in between soon.

I also got a tip on a gigantic dump in the middle of Ottawa. Few insulators, but lots of ginger bottles turning up. The problem with this place is the NCC will fine you if they catch you digging too much. THis morning I found about 10 porcelain wire cleats on the surface.

Sweet, that's were I found those shards. Have you turned up any NE Hamilton 143s yet? I was finding all sorts of those broken up along with a few broken lt. purple BTC 121s.
I enjoyed digging telegraph and toll styles, but I'm having good fun down here with some old power ROWs and some sweet, big mud.
I'd be interested in taking one of those little pieces off your hands if you want to dispose of one.
Thanks

Ted,

Sure, after I get a few more I will send you a picture. The ones I have are all quite different, so right now it would be hard to choose who has to go :) I thought I had more, but maybe I don't. More will turn up!

I have not found any Hamilton base 143's yet. Originally I dug above your spot, and found a few odd shards. When I dug up the slope to the south, that's where all the intact stuff was. I think the gap in between will contain some gems, but the gap is fairly small. There is a pile of junk at the bottom I want to move as well so I can get started at the base. There may be older bottles under there- I'll keep you posted.
