162,162.1 or what

Postby poorboy » Wed Sep 01, 2010 4:47 pm

the following pics show what appears to be a CD162 [230] embossing except the base is not round and the dome isn't as rounded. Looking at a CD162 I can't find an embossing that has the mold line thru the base. The measurement on the one in the photo is 3 1/8 x 4'' which neither fits the CD162 or 162.1 so what is it. Has anyone else have one of these.
Thanks for any help you may give me.

Looks like a 162 to me. I thought 162.3, but wire groove is wrong. Looked up the 162(230) in the online price guide. Old paper price guide shows it as a smooth base, but online and new price guide, it shows as a RB.

Hi Poorboy:
I'd be going with a 162 designation.
My interpretation of a RB is that the mold line is at the inner edge of the skirt, not around the outer edge as I see in your pic.
Brookfield made many cd styles with a RB, but only the 145 and 152 are commonly found in my experiance. They also made a wide range of signal styles, so picking a 162.1/162.3/162 can be tricky some times.

Thanks for the replies. Then 162 it is. I guess my real problem is with the measurements as 1/8 of a inch is quite a difference to be calling it the same CD #. Being a heavy duty mechanic if I had said it was within 1/8 of an inch so close enough I would have had a lot of problems, but then maybe I'm too fussy in my old age.

On an added note, what does the # below the Brookfield designate? I have 9 of this CD and mold # with the #s ranging from 1-11.

Hi Poorboy:
Yeah, an 1/8 of an inch on a tye rod end is a big deal. On a Brookfield signal, no so much ;)

Some Brookfield styles have a mold number under the "Brookfield" embossing, others don't. Some Brookfield styles have shop numbers on the top of the domes, others don't. As you can probably guess by now, Brookfield made lots of insulators and consistency was not a big concern for management.

To expand on the bases and their style, if I'm wrong, well then, wups!!!! The way I sometimes interpret bases is broken down by nationality. The Canadian 143's have round bases with mold lines. When it comes to American pieces (read:Brookfield), I don't consider them RB, but more of MLOB (Mold line over base). That's what I'd consider this one. It's basically a smooth base with MLOB.
