From the September, 1980 CJOW - "Me and the 143 by Grant Salzman":

"The Herkimer show was really nice. I had lots of fun and even got to buy a few 143's, although while I was setting up my table, other 143 collectors picked up almost all of the goodies! A 143 Standard in Blackglass sold for $400, and two gorgeous Montreal Telegraph 143's sold for approximately $85 each. One was a beautiful emerald green, and the other was a stunning dark sky blue. There were other 143's there which looked interesting, but before I could get my card file and get back, they were gone. In the future I may have to spend the whole time running up and down the aisles with paper and pencil (and money) in hand."

Can you imagine getting a blackglass Standard for $400, not to mention an emerald green Montreal for $85 (!)

Converting for inflation the blackglass standard would be around $1,150 in 2011 dollars, the Montreal would be around $240

Still woefully good prices by any modern standard. I guess we'll just have to continue searching for the ones still laying in the dirt out along the railways of Canada.

saw a vvnm one in Klingensmiths 97 yearbook listing at $3500-$4000,another i think from the Jim Mcleod collection with some repair. They look like the same color of the deep olive bar/bar 102s.Ray claims that he knows only of three in existance but i think there will only be one soon if they knock over that board on that narrow rail! :D

I'd love to know more about the picture. I'm guessing since it's a scan of an actual picture that it was taken a few years back. The description from 2006 says it was taken years ago in Calgary. The person who posted the picture is no longer a member of ICON. I wondered about the precarious setup too, one false move and those babies are going to fall. I'd love to see one of these in person. It's really odd to have such a dark colour in a relatively newer insulator (non-MLOD)

Forget where I lifted this picture from, I've had it for a while. One sweet piece of glass.

The colour of these pieces is reminiscent of the dark olive shades that the blotted out variants of the {vertical bar} / Diamond CD-102s are commonly found in. If the common nature of those pieces is any indicator, one would think there would be quite a few olive green STANDARDS around.
Killer piece, either way!

Eric Halpin is a former owner of one of the blackglass CD143s, see here:

I asked Eric about this insulator and he informed me that he was quite sure that his was originally picked in the west Toronto yards or along the CP tracks along the Lakeshore. It was sold to Ray K.
