Locations of Canadian Glass Factories

Postby Lee S. » Wed Feb 29, 2012 3:10 pm

I have been working on and off for the past couple of years, creating a map which shows the locations of the glass factories within Canada that were known (or suspected) to have made insulators.

Here is a sneak preview, which will hopefully whet your appetite to see more:

My intention is to make this map public, but only when I have the all of the locations nailed down.

I am struggling with the following locations and I am hoping someone out there can help me:

1. Hudson: Canada Glass Company
I'm very close on this one, i.e., within a hundred yards or so, but would like to nail it down exactly.

2. New Westminster: Crystal Glass Company
This one really has me stumped - I have a very approximate location only (i.e. within a couple of miles)

3. Como: Masson et Cie/Ottawa Glass Works/British American Glass Works
According to King (in Glass in Canada), it was on lot 11. I located this lot on a plan from 1916 (the earliest plan of the area I have been able to locate), but it doesn't "feel" right.

4. Kingsville: Ontario Glass
It was on lot 25 division 1, but I haven't been able to locate a plan of Kingsville in order to figure out where this is...

5. Trenton: Humphreys Glass (original location)
It was located between Main & High Streets, but I don't have the exact location

6a. Trenton: Humphreys Glass (second location)
6b. Trenton: Nova Scotia Glass/Diamond Glass
6c. Trenton: Lamont Glass/Diamond Glass
I know all three were all located on Glass St, but I don't have the exact location

Any help nailing down the above locations would be greatly appreciated.

And to whet your appetite even further, here is a list of the glass factories for which I do have the exact locations, note that the map also shows a few of the early Canadian glass factories that are not suspected of making insulators:

Ottawa Glass Works? Any chance this one was actually in or near Ottawa. If so I can probably scare up the location if you give me what You have location wise. (ie what Township, Lot, & Concession)

The Ottawa Glass Works was in the area which is called Como (Quebec) today, on the Ottawa River.

I can give you an exact location of Ontario Glass Works in Kingsville if I can make a map. Let me work on that....

That's great, thanks Shaun.

If you can't figure out how to make a map, just send me a description and I can do it.
