Is there such a thing as a worthless insulator? What does everyone do with the ones that are in too bad a shape to display. I have a bin full of chipped and cracked insulators of all types that I don't know what to do with. I won't throw them in the landfill but can't keep them all either so what do I do?

THe commons that are chipped cracked and damaged for the most part I toss out. The ones that are common but not damaged to badly this is where they go.

And then what after a few years?

YOu get more crates and fill them up. I am nut sure what I will do with them after just hate to toss them I figure there is around 5,000 insulators in this shed. Jerry Markewich went through them one day one long day lol. I have aobut 500 or so pieces in my collection and not a whole ot more room I might end up downsizing it when i finally start building shelves in my newly drywalled insulator room. One day I might find a use for them.

I think I may donate some of mine to a local artist to use in making lawn ornaments or whatever she will make with them. At least they won't be lost in a landfill.

I have hundreds of worthless insulators outside on display. They are, for the most part, chipped or cracked and virtually worthless. I have no worries that anyone will steal them, at least not very many and if they do, replacements are a dime a dozen.

My first outside display was a metal tree made from used rebar bought at a scrapyard for a few, very few dollars. 10 ft high and 3.5 ft in dia. it had pins for 600 insulators. I did not use proper pins but used 4 inch lengths of rebar. It was fun to make and not too hard.

The second style of tree I made was from 60 four pin tramp brackets that I found along a 10 miles section of track. the poles had been cut back in the early 70's and all the parts- minus the wire, were there. Man that stuff gets heavy in a hurry ! What I liked about this project was that the brackets bolted together using the insulator pins. A minimum of welding and the only steel I had to buy was the centre section. Again, a cheap display for 200 insulators.
