Baggage Tag

While I was taking a break from insulator hunting I was totally obsessed with metal detecting. Here is a 'go with' that I found, a Grand Trunk baggage tag.

Cool find, Cliff. Metal looks like it might be brass? Dimensions?

Yes, I think it's brass. It measures 2" x 2-1/2".

That's cool!

How old do you figure it is? 20s? 30s?
I've started collecting railroad paraphernalia recently, so that stuff really floats my boat for some reason. I turned up a Rome, Waterdown & Ogdensburg Railroad tag that is similar (and made of brass) a couple years ago, but I'd love to find a Canadian one!
Keep searching.

I was going to say 'It was found near a line that came under GTR control in 1883 so I think it likely dates sometime between 1883 and 1923 when the GTR became part of the CNR.'. I decided before I answered to see if I could narrow it down some and it only made matters worse. CNR continued to use the Grand Trunk logo after 1923, presumably only on Grand Trunk lines. I found a 1941 timetable with the same logo and sill tilted in the same manner and a 1946 timetable where the logo was no longer tilted. I guess this means that the possible end date has moved to somewhere between 1941 and 1946. Also, I found an 1883 timetable that did not use this logo but an 1899 timetable where they did. So the start date would be between 1883 and 1899. So I guess it dates somewhere between 1884 and 1945. There was nothing else that I found at the same location where I found the tag that would help with the dating.

Great question Andy! Yes there was a station in the vicinity during the Grand Trunk years which does not appear on some later CN timetables. If I can find out when the station closed that might help narrow down the time frame.
