Hello everyone and a healthy & prosperous 2011 to you all. Went into a shop yesterday and the shipper was using this as a paperweight. I went back today with a pretty, weighty insulator and brought the "paperweight" home. Wondering if anyone has any idea of what it might be. 4" tall, 4 1/2" across the bottom, 6 sided, 5 lb. piece of ???????green glass.

Reid: I bought an almost identical piece as a souvenir on a trip to Boston. It's a "skylight" from a wooden ship. It would be mounted to the deck with the flat side up and the point down thru the ceiling of the deck below. The sunlight would then go thru the top and refract at all six faces, lighting up the second deck, at least that's the story that came on the box mine came in

It is a Deck Prism....

Ian Macky has lots of info on them on his site...

I saw these for sale at the gift shop when I visited Mystic seaport.

You can buy them online here:

Neat chunk of glass.

Thanks guys for the info. I'm guessing that the piece I have is a repro because the base is not perfectly flat, slight depression at the middle of the base. I'm sure I read somewhere that the original pieces were uniformly flat across the base. Is there a sure way to tell if it is original. The only thing seen in the glass is a small, 1 1/2" long, steam swirl. No markings at all.
