Was out hunting an old power line I found earlier this week, and turned up some interesting things. The line wasn't massive, but was insulated with 2 CD 293 Locke's per pole with the odd early Canadian porcelain cable or multipart thrown in. Going was pretty bushy (but it always is) and all of the Locke's so far have been broken, but I did recover a few nice Canadian porcelain pieces as well as a pair of straw 1678 162.4's. Most intriguing though was the remains of an amazing and ancient yellow multipart that I've posted to ICON for (hopefully) identification. It's a long line, so there's plenty more to go, according to vintage topographical maps it's been down since at least 1938.
How long do you think the line is? It sounds like it could contain some interesting stuff! If you are still just near the crossing, you could start to find some earlier pieces further from the access point you are using! Keep up the good work, and share photos as you go!
I'm not sure of total length, but a few miles for sure. Its not on any vintage maps at the McMaster collection, and I happened on it completely by accident. It's in one of those places were only those who know where it is can find it.
The yellow multipart was identified as the unipart Thomas U-967 which is apparently quite rare. If you look it up in the picture poster, there's a shot of a yellow one like this by Elton Gish. Amazing insulator, I really hope I can turn a whole one up. In the meantime, I'm going to try and rake out the rest of the shards of this unit and hopefully piece together a 293 for kicks.
